Pray the Liturgy of the Hours

Liturgy of the Hours

Picture
Lectio divina is a form of meditation rooted in liturgical celebration that dates back to early monastic communities. It was a method practiced by monks in their daily encounter with Scripture, both as they prepared for the Eucharist and as they prayed the Liturgy of the Hours.
The Latin phrase “lectio divina” may be translated as “divine reading.”  As one reads and invites the Word to become a transforming lens that brings the events of daily living into focus, one can come to live more deeply and find the presence of God more readily in the events of each day. The method of lectio divina follows four steps:
  • lectio (reading)
  • meditatio (meditation)
  • contemplatio (contemplation)
  • and oratio (prayer)

Use these Lectio Divina guides to meditate, contemplate, and pray.

SPECIAL YEAR OF SAINT JOSEPH CLOSING MASS
All are invited to join Bishop Mark for 5:30 pm Mass
at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona
on December 8, 2021.
This Mass is in celebration of the closing of the Year of St. Joseph
declared by Pope Francis and the one year anniversary
of his exhortation Patris corde, “With a Father’s Heart.
Conclusion of Patris corde: With a Father’s Heart
The Special Year of St. Joseph will come to close on December 8, 2021
The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The aim of this Apostolic Letter is to increase our love for Saint Joseph, this great saint, to encourage us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtue and his zeal. Indeed, the proper mission of the saints is not only to obtain miracles and graces, but to intercede for us before God.  The saints help all the faithful to “strive for the holiness and the perfection of their particular state of life.” Their lives are concrete proof that it is possible to put the Gospel into practice.  Jesus told us: “Learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart.” (Mt 11:29) By his eloquent silence, Saint Joseph says the same.  We need only ask Saint Joseph for the grace of graces: our conversion.

Let us now make our prayer to him:
Hail Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen

Given in Rome, at Saint John Lateran, on 8 December, Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the year 2020, the eighth of my Pontificate.  Franciscus  (Pope Francis Apostolic Letter Patris corde, 2020, 7. Dec. 8, 2020; 2021)

Advent is a time of hopeful anticipation as we prepare to celebrate the remembrance of the Lord’s first coming and, also,
recalling his final coming in glory at the end of time.
There are many preparations for Christmas that demand our time and attention. Make sure to fill your Advent days with prayerful preparation.
Read scripture, pray the rosary with special attention to the Joyful Mysteries
and spend time before the Blessed Sacrament.
Advent is a time of hope and faith.

The stewardship way of life is very much a journey. We don’t have to have every aspect of our life perfectly nailed down; we are all “works in progress” called simply to take one step at a time to Christ. It is God who started this good work in us on the day of our Baptism. He cares deeply about this journey of ours and he will give us the strength and grace we need to stay faithful to Him and continue growing in love and imitation of Christ.

This Advent, let’s turn away from bad habits or sin that may have crept into our lives and turn our hearts and minds back to Christ. This is what the stewardship way of life is all about, moving closer and closer in relationship with Christ, ready to celebrate His birth, with eyes fixed on eternal life. When we share our time especially with the “least of our brothers and sisters,” we are imitating Him.

Please keep in your prayers all those who are away from their families to ensure our safety and well being, our Military, Law Enforcement, First Responders and Medical Personnel.

We can never relay our true gratitude for all you do, the sacrifices that you and your families make, and your demonstrated drive to go above and beyond. We hope each and every one of you hear our prayers.
Lord, hold our Military, Law Enforcement, First Responders and Medical Personnel in your loving hands.

Please give them continued strength and courage needed so that we may enjoy freedom, safety and good health. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our times of need.  Amen

In studying Church history, the importance of TRADITION and HERITAGE to the early Christians can easily be seen. Ironically, many Christians today fear that TRADITION and the importance of HERITAGE are disappearing in society and even in our own families. As one way to help keep tradition and heritage alive in our parish and in our families, the Resurrection Family Christmas Tree will be placed in the sanctuary once again this year during the Christmas Season. Each household is being asked to bring an ornament that signifies something important to your family. The ornaments can be homemade or purchased, they can be an heirloom, or they can be anything else that fittingly represents what is important to your family. Don’t forget to apply your name to the ornament as well. Ornaments will be returned after the Christmas Season. Please bring your ornament to Mass on the Fourth Sunday of Advent (Dec. 19) and place them in one of the boxes at the back of the church.
